Pool Cage Gutter Repair in Tampa, FL

Super gutter and pool cage gutter repair across Tampa, FL and Tampa Bay: what fails, what it costs per foot, whether the cage has to come down, and why the gutter is a structural part of the enclosure.

  • Super gutters
  • Leaks, sags and end caps
  • Replacement without a rebuild
  • Six Tampa Bay counties

Pool cage gutter repair in Tampa, FL ranges from resealing a leaking seam to replacing the whole super gutter at a published $15 to $75 per linear foot, and the gutter matters more than its size suggests. On most attached pool cages, the super gutter along the house is the beam the cage roof hangs from. When it sags, leaks or pulls away, the roof of the cage, the fascia of the house and the deck below all feel it.

This page covers pool cage gutter repair Tampa homeowners ask about: what a super gutter is, the signs of trouble, costs, whether the cage has to come down, and the permit and licensing questions. It applies across Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Manatee, Sarasota and Hernando counties.

What a super gutter is, and why it is structural

A super gutter is the heavy aluminum gutter that both drains the house roof and holds up the pool cage roof. A national cost guide describes it as 5 to 7 inches wide, heavy-gauge aluminum, forming the link between the house and the pool enclosure, supporting the weight of the enclosure, protecting the fascia and draining the roof.

The Florida Building Code treats it as part of the structure. Section 2002 defines an enclosure's primary members as the framing that supports other members, and lists beams, posts, columns, structural gutters, headers, eave rails and purlins among them. Each primary member has to carry a 300 pound load applied straight down along any 1 foot of its length, on top of the wind loads the cage is designed for. That is why a sagging super gutter is a structural repair, not a gutter cleaning.

Signs your pool cage gutter needs repair

Water where it should not be, or a gutter line that is no longer straight, are the two big warnings. Check after a heavy afternoon storm, when problems are easiest to see:

  • Water pouring over the front edge of the gutter onto the screen roof or the deck
  • Drips at seams, corners or end caps while the rest of the run is dry
  • Standing water in the gutter a day after rain
  • A gutter line that dips between roof beams when you sight along it
  • The gutter pulling away from the fascia, or a gap opening at the top
  • Rust stains or streaks below the screws
  • Stained, soft or peeling fascia and soffit behind or below the gutter
  • Cage roof beams near the house sitting lower than the ones further out

Why Tampa Bay is hard on these gutters

Tampa International Airport averages 49.48 inches of rain a year, with 7.37 inches in June, 7.75 in July, 9.03 in August and 6.09 in September (1991 to 2020 normals). Storms test gutters far beyond that: Hurricane Milton dropped 11.43 inches at Tampa International in one day, its second-highest daily total on record, and 18.54 inches at Albert Whitted Airport in St. Petersburg. In Lakewood Ranch, the Braden River at River Club Boulevard took 11.57 inches in 24 hours during Hurricane Debby in August 2024, more than a 100-year storm design.

A super gutter sized and sloped for normal summer rain can overflow in a downpour like that, and an overflowing gutter loaded with leaves, oak catkins and pine needles is also a heavier gutter. Near the coast, salt air adds a third stress: University of Florida research found fastener corrosion worse in coastal environments, and the screws into the fascia are what hold the gutter up.

Replacing a super gutter without rebuilding the cage

Worker standing on a dark pool cage roof beam above a tile-roofed house
Working on a cage roof. Roof panels take the most sun and the most debris, so they usually fail before the walls.

A super gutter can usually be replaced with the pool cage left standing. The roof beams that sit on the gutter are supported, the gutter comes off and a new one goes up, and the roof is fastened back on. That keeps the cost to the gutter, not a new enclosure. A typical sequence:

  1. 1
    Inspect the whole run

Seams, end caps, downspouts, fasteners into the fascia, and the roof members that sit on the gutter are checked, along with the fascia and soffit behind it.

  2. 2
    Support the cage roof

Temporary supports carry the roof beams so the gutter can come off without the roof dropping.

  3. 3
    Remove the old gutter

Roof members are unfastened from the gutter, the gutter is unscrewed from the house and taken down, and the fascia behind it is checked for rot.

  4. 4
    Set the new gutter

The new super gutter is fastened to the house along its full length, level and pitched to drain.

  5. 5
    Reconnect the roof

Each roof beam is fastened back to the new gutter and the temporary supports come out.

  6. 6
    Seal and water-test

Seams and end caps are sealed, downspouts connected, and the gutter is run with water to check for drips and standing water.

Permits and licensing for gutter work

Small repairs usually need no permit; replacing the super gutter is structural work, so ask first. Florida's HB 803, in effect since July 1, 2026, exempts single-family work under $7,500 from permits on a written request, but excludes structural work and flood-zone properties. Because the code counts a structural gutter as a primary member, a super gutter replacement is unlikely to qualify. Manatee County lists repairs of hardware or fasteners as work needing no permit but a licensed contractor, and Pinellas County requires a permit for any work over $500 or that needs an inspection.

The work falls under Florida's Specialty Structure Contractor license, which covers screened and pool enclosures but may not alter the structure of the house itself, such as roof trusses or load-bearing walls. If the rafter tails or trusses behind a rotten fascia are damaged, that part is house work. Hillsborough County also issues a local aluminum structure license.

Keeping a super gutter working

A quality extruded aluminum super gutter can last 20 to 30 years in Florida with maintenance, per a Central Florida gutter company. Most of that maintenance is simple:

  • Clear leaves, needles and moss from the gutter before the June rainy season and again in fall
  • Run a hose through it once a year to find drips at seams and end caps
  • Keep downspouts clear and pointed away from the deck and the house
  • Trim oak and pine branches that overhang the gutter line
  • Check the screws into the fascia for rust, especially near salt water
  • Sight along the gutter after any big storm to catch a new sag early

Some HOAs set the gutter color along with the frame: the Venetian Golf and River Club in Venice calls for bronze super gutters with bronze cages and charcoal screen. A gutter replacement is also a good time for pool cage painting so the new gutter and old frame match, and a screen roof that took overflow damage is a pool screen repair or a full pool cage rescreening.

Pool cage gutter repair in Tampa, FL: frequently asked questions

What is a super gutter on a pool cage?

A super gutter is a 5 to 7 inch wide, heavy-gauge aluminum gutter mounted along the house that carries the pool cage roof. It supports the weight of the enclosure, protects the fascia and drains the house roof, and the Florida Building Code lists structural gutters among an enclosure's primary members.

How much does it cost to replace a super gutter?

Published Florida prices run $15 to $30 per linear foot for a new or replacement super gutter, which an Orlando-area company puts at $1,200 to $3,000 for a typical 60 to 100 foot run. A Florida screen company quotes $35 to $75 per linear foot for super gutter repair or replacement.

Can a super gutter be replaced without rebuilding the pool cage?

Usually yes. The cage roof is supported temporarily, the old gutter is unfastened and taken down, and a new one is set and the roof members reattached, so the cage stays standing. If the roof beams or the house fascia behind the gutter are also damaged, that work is added to the job.

Florida pool barrier diagram: barrier at least 4 feet high, outward-opening self-closing gate, and house doors latching at least 54 inches up
Florida's pool barrier rules in one picture: the barrier is at least 4 feet high on the outside, gates open outward and self-close and self-latch, and house doors into the pool area need self-closing, self-latching hardware released at least 54 inches up. Not to scale.
Why is my pool cage gutter leaking?

The most common causes are failed sealant at seams and end caps, a clogged gutter or downspout overflowing in a summer downpour, and screws that have corroded or pulled loose. Tampa gets 49.48 inches of rain a year on average, most of it June through September, so leaks show up in summer first.

Do I need a permit to repair a pool cage gutter?

Sealing seams and clearing a gutter generally does not, but replacing a super gutter is replacing a primary structural member, which Florida's under-$7,500 permit exemption excludes. Manatee County lists repairs of hardware or fasteners as needing no permit but a licensed contractor. Ask your building department before a gutter is replaced.
